Summary: Ardagh Chalice

Key dates:

The very best example of Irish metalwork of the early Christian period is the Ardagh Chalice which dates from the early 8th century. This chalice is made of silver, with intricate panels of gold filigree and red and blue glass studs. The design of the studs is based on the cross. The names of the apostles are lightly engraved in the silver below the band of gold panelling. It has a thick bronze stem, heavily gilt with very intricate work which is repeated at the handles.
