Summary: Tools of mesolithic period

Key dates:

In this period stone working technology changed from microliths to larger single piece artefacts. Some of the most commonly found pieces are leaf shaped flakes of flint which are constricted at the butt end. These are known as Bann Flakes. At the same time the climate became warmer and wetter. This meant that the vegetation changed and more oak, elm and alder grew. Because more wood was available, these people may have been involved in wood working. Scrapers were also widely used in the cleaning of skins.
