Summary: A Fine Wake

Key dates:

Before the Famine, death was ‘celebrated’ with a wake designed to send the deceased into the next world. This 1841 sketch shows women grieving around the deceased while the men are enjoying the occasion. Even the poor set aside money to give themselves a fine wake. The scale of death in the Famine years interrupted this custom.
