Summary: Holy Well

Key dates:

This photograph, taken in May 1912, captures a scene that was common earlier in the century. It shows Doon Well in Co. Donegal, where the water was believed to have special healing powers. In the foreground you can see old crutches with bandages wrapped around them, left by cured visitors. People often came to these ‘holy’ sites on summer Sundays.
