Summary: Lock-Keeper’s Cottage

Key dates:

Newry had become a very important trading centre by the second half of the 18th century. Much of its prosperity was due to the Newry Canal which had opened in 1742. There was often great activity around the canal’s 15 lock gates in the 18 miles stretch of canal.
