Summary: Linen Hall Library

Key dates:

A new library organised by the Belfast Society for Promoting Knowledge was opened at the end of the 18th century. It provided a meeting place for the growing educated class in Belfast and was particularly popular with the town’s radical Presbyterians many of whom were involved in the United Irishmen. Its first librarian, Thomas Russell, was hanged in 1803.
