Summary: Ribbonmen

Key dates:

The Ribbonmen were a secret society which spread through most of Ulster in the mid-19th century. Their gatherings were marked by secret rituals. This sketch shows Ribbonmen drinking whiskey in a barn in Co. Monaghan just after they had conducted a ‘trial’ against a land agent that they arranged to have assassinated.
