Summary: Irish peasant

Key dates:

Many cottiers rented a small plot of land from tenant farmers. These men often worked as labourers for other farmers, receiving wages on a daily basis. The haymaking season gave the peasant a chance to earn extra income. Incomes varied from as little as 4d per day in poor parts of the west to as much as 10d per day in prosperous parts of Ulster.
