Summary: Furniture of the Poor
Key dates:
Arthur Young’s record of his visit to Ireland in the 1770s gave an accurate description of the standard furniture found in many homes of the Irish poor in 1779 "….in many case consisting only of a pot for boiling their potatoes, a bit of a table and one or two broken stools, beds are not always found. (But) I have been in a multitude of cabins that had tables, chairs, boxes, chest of drawers and earthenware".
