Summary: Newry Canal

Key dates:

This plan of ‘Newry and the works of the Navigation’ was drawn in 1763. The famous canal was started in 1731 and it carried coal from east Tyrone eventually to Dublin. The inland section was completed in 1742 and by the end of the 18th century Newry with its 18 miles of canal, was a major port.
