Summary: Cots

Key dates:

The word ‘cot’ comes from the Irish word coite which means dug-out. In early times cots were dug out of timber. Later in the 18th century these simple wooden cots with their rectangular shape were used widely on the Lower Bann. This picture shows cots on the Nore and Suir.
