Although this painting dates from the 1840s, it gives us an accurate picture of life and work in a typical Ulster farmer – weaver’s cottage around the turn of the century. The spinning was done mainly by women, while men did the weaving. Cottage industry enabled small farmers to supplement the income they earned from agriculture.
