Summary: Thatching

Key dates:

In Ulster flax thatch was used in some counties, but in parts of west Ulster rushes and river reed were used. The photograph shows river reed stacked and drying prior to its use for thatching. Older accounts describe how poorer people used heather and bracken as roof-thatching material for their homes.
