Summary: Early shipyard

Key dates:

This 1812 painting shows shipbuilding in progress at the old yard on the north bank of the Lagan. The yard was run by William Ritchie and by 1811 he employed 44 carpenters, 55 apprentices, 7 pairs of sawyers, 12 blacksmiths and several joiners. The weekly wage bill was £120, a huge sum at that time.
