Some poems were written and recited with verses or lines alternating in English and Irish. To understand them people needed to have a knowledge of both languages. Poems written in this way were referred to as being in macaronic verse. Here is an example: “Yesterday morning, maidin inné, I killed a goose, mhárbh mé gé, The knife was too sharp, bhi an scian ro-ghéar, And I cut my finger, ghera mé mo mhear”.
