John Mitchel was the son of an Ulster Presbyterian minister. He was also a militant nationalist. After participating in the Young Ireland rebellion Mitchell was convicted and transported to Tasmania, but he escaped in 1853 and made his way to America. There in 1854 he published his Jail Journal, and this work became one of the most important books in 19th century Ireland. It made a huge impact on nationalist thinking.
