By 1905 the trams had been electrified. Electric trams were able to offer much cheaper transport and this meant that they were used regularly by ordinary workers, particularly the shipyard men as the tramway now ran right to the yard. In fact, 80 tramcars ran every work day before 8am to service the shipyard route. Many of the tickets cost only 1d.
