Summary: The Spread of Railways
Key dates:
The 1850s had seen the rapid growth of the railway network in Ireland and, as the map shows, Ireland had a well developed rail system by 1900. Although Irish railways never carried the huge volume of traffic seen of the British railways, they made a great impact on the country. More people travelled and factory made goods could be transported quickly around the country. Simple things like bread and newspapers could now be taken to most towns on the day that they were produced.
