One of the most prolific Ulster-born writers of this period was Canon James Hannay who served as rector in Westport, Co. Mayo. Hannay used the pseudonym, George Birmingham, and he produced about 60 novels. One of his best works was The Red Hand of Ulster which was published in 1912. This was a political fantasy which accurately predicted many of the subsequent political developments in the province.
