Summary: Carntall House

Key dates:

Substantial farmers often lived in 2 storey, long slated farmhouses. These homes did not have the usual beaten earth floors, as a gentleman-farmer could have afforded fired clay tiles. Carntall House, which was destroyed by fire in 1932, had glazed windows and open fires heated individual rooms. A well-maintained garden lay behind the hedge. Such a home would have had a large ‘sitting room’, where the best furniture would have been kept. It also would have had a pantry and a large kitchen in which the farm labourers would have been fed.
