Summary: Slatted Press
Key dates:
Food was often stored on hooks which hung from ceilings or on batons which were nailed to the underside of the timber joists of the wooden ceiling. The photograph shows a more unusual system of food storage above the kitchen fireplace. Attached to the ceiling joists is a slatted wooden press where home-cured bacon would be stored. These bacon safes could be found in homes of prosperous farmers in the late 19th century.
