This photograph taken in 1899 shows a typical kitchen scene in a small Co. Kerry cottage. All the cooking was done over the open turf fire and the kitchen furniture was very basic with the open dresser having holes instead of drawer knobs. Still, the children of poor rural families enjoyed a better diet and healthier lifestyle than town children.
