Summary: The Co-operative Movement
Key dates:
At the beginning of the 20th century the co-operative movement took off in Ireland and by 1914 there were over 1,000 ‘co-ops’. The driving force behind this development was Horace Plunkett. His ambition was to improve Irish agriculture and he encouraged farmers to work together to sell their produce and buy goods such as fertiliser in bulk. The most popular type of co-operative was the creamery and the use of a new mechanical cream separator and churn dramatically improved the quality of the Irish dairy products produced by the co-operatives.
