Summary: Tattie Hokers

Key dates:

During the harvest season poor farmers from the west of Ireland took the opportunity to earn money by travelling around the country selling their labour. Many men and women left Donegal for Ayrshire in Scotland where potatoes were grown in large quantities. There they were known as ‘Tattie Hokers’ as they gathered the tatties or potatoes into the wooden barrels which can be seen in the photograph.
