Summary: Cattle Market

Key dates:

On the day of a cattle market farmers drove their cattle along the roads and into town, looking to sell their animals to other farmers or cattle dealers. The actual art of clinching a deal always attracted onlookers. Spitting on hands and then slapping the dealer’s hand was all part of this strange process that went on at cattle markets all over Ireland. When the deal had been made the buyer would ask for a ‘luck penny’ which would usually be given.
