Summary: Aughnacloy Egg Market

Key dates:

If eggs were produced in sufficient quantity the farmer’s wife had the opportunity to sell her produce in the nearby town or village. At certain times of the year fruit such as blackberries were also bought by the inhabitants of the village. This allowed a family to supplement its income. The photograph shows a woman in a long shawl selling eggs which have been brought to town in a wicker basket and laid out on loose straw.
