Summary: Mourning Beads

Key dates:

The Victorians took mourning the dead very seriously. Ladies would have worn only black clothes for a year after a husband’s death and would then have worn dark colours such as purple before returning to normal colours. Their jewellery also reflected this serious approach to life. These are jet mourning beads which would have been worn by women in deep mourning. No bright colours would have been acceptable.
