Summary: Declining Birth Rates
Key dates:
This table shows the change in birth rates for each Ulster county between 1871 and 1911. Counties Antrim and Down had the lowest birth rates in 1911 and they were the two most prosperous counties. Donegal had by far the highest birth rate and it had grown significantly since 1871. These figures combined with Donegal’s poor economy explain why emigration, both seasonal and permanent, was such an important feature of Donegal society.
