In the second half of the 19th century, huge numbers left Ireland to settle in the United States. Even though the pace of emigration to the USA slackened after 1860, 12.5% of all new immigrants to the USA during the 1880s were Irish. Other destinations remained popular. Between 1881 and 1901, 67,000 Irish emigrated to Australia and New Zealand.
