Summary: Lent

Key dates:

It was the custom for Catholics to take palms to Mass on Palm Sunday for blessing by the parish priest. If palms were not available, leaves and small branches from a variety of trees were taken. This was done on the Sunday before the end of Lent, a period of 40 days and 40 nights that began on Ash Wednesday. When the palms had been blessed, they were kept in the home, often beside a holy picture.
