Summary: Roman Catholics and Trade

Key dates:

The Penal Laws at the end of the 17th century meant that many Roman Catholics, deprived of access to many other professions, made their money in trade. They were particularly successful in Galway. However in most other ports, Cork, Waterford and Limerick, Protestants dominated trade.
