Summary: London Guilds
Key dates:
Ulster really did not have towns until the Plantation in 1610. Co Derry was given to the London Guilds which formed the “Irish Society” to look after this property. These guilds brought their trades, ranging from vintners to drapers or salters or mercers. New towns, in the English fashion, grew up with well laid out street patterns. Such towns include Londonderrry, Strabane, Dungannon, Letterkenny and Macosquin. Derry became prosperous with a rich export trade in wool, skins and timber.
