Summary: 16th Century Travel
Key dates:
Travel in the 16th century was very difficult because of the lack of good roads. Rivers were used for transport and coastal towns were accessed by sea. Inland towns were not really important and were mostly for local markets or garrisons. Trade from Leinster and Munster was usually via Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford. Waterford’s proximity to Bristol made it an obvious trading partner for it and it also helped to make Waterford very English in character.
