Summary: Coins and Exchequer
Key dates:
The king’s representative in Ireland, the Viceroy, was assisted by a council. This was a group of important officials who looked after the business of ruling the country. One of the most important departments of this council was the exchequer which kept account of all the money spent and of all the taxes lifted. The exchequer gets its name from the checked cloth which covered the table and which was used to help to calculate the money.
