Summary: Examples of Trade
Key dates:
There were very few markets in early medieval Ireland. Some trading did take place at the annual assembly, or oenach. There is evidence of trade with other countries; Dublin traded with Bristol and Wales and there was some trade in slaves as well as in wine.
Originally Ireland had no coinage and trade was carried on by barter or exchange, principally in cattle. In 890AD coinage was introduced and by c 995 Dublin was minting its own silver money. The coins of Sitric Silkenbeard, who was King of Dublin 1000-1042, have the sign of the cross included.
