Summary: Means of Transport Pre Viking
Key dates:
Ordinary people travelled very little as they really had no need to do so. Many would have walked and, for longer distances, if you could have afforded one, you may have gone on horseback. Poets and entertainers travelled all over the country mainly on foot. Kings, however, travelled with their retinue on horseback and were entertained by their subjects in winter time.
There were five great roads which, according to tradition, all led to Tara. These were probably only like cattle tracks or paths for horses. Some used carts which were drawn by one or two horses.
Small coracle type boats or dugout canoes were used for transport on rivers, lakes and even at sea.
