Summary: Protestant Interest in Irish

Key dates:

By the end of the 18th century a number of the Irish gentry and educated middle classes developed an interest in Irish. Many folksongs and tales were collected and published. The first of these to be published was by Charlotte Brooke from a Protestant family in Co Fermanagh. She had learned Irish as a child. Her book was published in Dublin in 1789.
