Summary: Irish Language Examples

Key dates:

Examples of native Irish language can be seen on some stone memorials and on metal church bells. The early Christian memorial slab found at Clonmacnoise has on it words asking a prayer for Mael-Finnia. Such slabs were later developed into stone crosses. Another example of the Irish language of the period is to be found on the Bell of Armagh which was cast in bronze and has an inscription asking a prayer for Cumascach, son of Ailill, who died in 904AD.
