Summary: Official Documents
Key dates:
Latin was the language of official documents such as the papal bull which excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I in 1570. This document was entitled “Regnans in Excelsis”. Elizabeth was then declared a heretic and, as such, Roman Catholics no longer had to obey her.
Latin was also the language of the church. It was important therefore for those young men who wished to study to become priests to be taught Latin and there were thirteen Latin schools in Dublin and the south at the end of the 16th century.
