Summary: Last Castles

Key dates:

As the 16th century came to an end, the people who lived in castles were looking for homes which were more luxurious. More complex tower houses were built, although many were still surrounded by walls as there was still fear of attack. Windows became larger, ceilings were higher and had decorative plasterwork and the stairways were wider and made of oak. The earliest and one of the most important of these was Rathfarmham Castle built about 1589 by Archbishop Adam Loftus.
