Summary: Town Houses

Key dates:

Typical Anglo Norman towns were surrounded by walls and entered through gates. Individual properties, known as burgage plots, were arranged in strips along the streets of a town. These had a house the gables of which fronted onto the main street, with outhouses and gardens behind. Because space was in short supply, access to these houses was gained by going down an alley or lane at the gable end. This is why so many narrow passageways exist in towns of Anglo Norman origin.
