Summary: Fireplace in Castle
Key dates:
The fireplaces in these castles provided much needed warmth as the castles were very cold and damp. Window glass was not well sealed where it existed and, in many castles, only shutters were used. The rooms had very high ceilings and so good fires were essential. A lord’s coat of arms often hung above the fireplace which was a focal point in the room. At night many soldiers and servants folded up the trestle tables and slept on the floor of the great hall enjoying the warmth of the dying fire.
