Summary: Iron Age Cookery
Key dates:
Cooking was done on open hearths both inside and outside the houses. The ash which was found in many of these hearths was peat and any charcoal found had come from small trees such as hazel or willow.
Large iron cauldrons were the most widely used cooking equipment and this indicates that boiling was the common means of cooking.
The Iron Age people ate well and had a varied diet of their own crops, meat, milk and butter. On festival days there was venison, salmon or honey as a special treat.
