Summary: Donegal Castle

Key dates:

Several medieval castles were adapted for use by the planters. One of the most elaborate of these conversions was at Donegal Castle where the home of the O’Donnells was remodelled by Sir Basil Brook, a servitor. He added a fine Jacobean mansion, with a number of large mullioned windows and a very fine carved fireplace. Pynnar’s Survey described it as “..a fair bawn..within which is a strong house of stone..”
