Summary: Changes in Houses
Key dates:
As the early medieval period progressed, the style of dwelling house changed from round to rectangular. It is unclear why such changes took place but Ireland seems to have been the last area in Europe to have had round houses. These may have been perceived as socially inappropriate.
These rectangular houses were built of stone but there is little evidence for the materials and construction of upper walls and roofs.
True crannogs date from this period also.
