Summary: Tower Houses
Key dates:
As attacks on the Anglo Norman families never really ceased completely, a tower house became a necessity for those who could afford it. In Co Down a particular style of these tower houses developed. It was square with a small door in the side wall of a recess and was defended from above by an arched machicolation (holes in wall from which missiles could be thrown). Good examples of these are Audley’s Castle near Strangford and Jordan’s Castle at Ardglass.
