Summary: Types of Food

Key dates:

The Neolithic people came to Ireland about 4500BC and brought with them the skill of farming. However they still used the wild resources of fish, deer, nuts and berries and may even have hung crab apples around the house to dry. They brought the earliest seeds and some domesticated animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. This meant that they had a much more varied diet than their Mesolithic ancestors. They grew barley and at least two different kinds of wheat; einkorn and emmer. This meant that they could now grind the grain and bake bread. They would probably have had milk to drink as well.
