Summary: Bawns

Key dates:

When the Plantation of Ulster took place at the beginning of the 17th century, the planters were instructed to build fortified houses called bawns for themselves. These were large houses within a high walled structure such as O’Cahan’s bawn at Dungiven. The architecture varied a little and Monea Castle in Co Fermanagh is a good example of Scottish architecture.
