Summary: Dundrum Castle Keep
Key dates:
The main living accommodation in the castle was the fortified tower known as the keep. These were either square or round; the latter were better for defence as there were no corners for the enemy to undermine. The de Lacy family built the round keep at Dundrum, Co Down. The walls were very thick and the openings were kept to a minimum outside for protection. Inside the window openings splayed wide to let in as much light as possible. The door was at first floor level, also for protection.
