Summary: Castles
Key dates:
The Normans soon progressed to building great stone castles. The main period for this was from about 1180 to 1310. The size and layout varied but all were constructed on sites where ease of protection from attack was a main criterion. The castle at Carrickfergus, Co Antrim was built by John de Courcy to show his power at that time. This castle has been enlarged on two occasions since it was first built in the late 12th century.
